How Do Digital Scales Measure Body Fat?
Digital scales use a method called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure body fat. A safe (and painless) electric current is sent through your body from your bare feet and meets varying degrees of resistance as it passes through your muscles, fat and bones. (Fat is not an electrolyte and cannot conduct electricity).
Based on the resistance encountered, the scale's software calculates the impedance, or resistance to the flow of electrical current. It then uses that impedance value, along with other factors such as height, weight, age, and gender (usually pre-entered) to estimate body fat percentage.
